With the mighty public platform Kathy has built for herself, she’s also able to throw her comic bombast behind social causes close to her heart. She is a long-standing advocate for LGBTQ rights and has spoken and performed at many political events as well as organized a rally in DC in 2010 to lobby for the repeal of the military’s “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. Kathy has also been active in various AIDS-related organizations, contributing to fund-raisers and awareness events.

The price Kathy pays for doing comedy her way is sometimes steep. She has been temporarily banned from late-night and daytime talk shows for her unflinching comedy and denounced by morality groups. And then there are always personal threats leveled at Kathy through social media because, well, funny women are dangerous. Why do you think they say a comic “killed it” when she had an awesome set?

A swipe at the Trump presidency in 2017 nearly ended her career when an image from a photography shoot surfaced of Kathy holding up the disembodied mannequin head of the American president. Red state, Blue state, Green party, or card-carrying Klingon—no one was eager to defend Kathy in the name of comedy, the First Amendment, or anything else. She lost work. She lost friends. She was harassed on- and offline. Nearly a year later, she turned her experience with “haters” into “hateraid” and launched the world comedy Laugh Your Head Off Tour.

Through all of Kathy’s hairpin career turns, she has remained staunchly unapologetic for someone who enjoys taking comedy to its extreme. It’s all part of a job Kathy has loved doing for more than thirty years: using humor to dismantle the lines drawn around “taste” and “political correctness” while challenging notions of what is and isn’t acceptable territory for funny women to rule.
